Scale to classify extratropical cyclones in Europe based on their maximum winds and possible damage in populated areas. The scale consists of 5 categories with two previous classified as extratropical depression and extratropical storm. The data are obtained directly from the numerical model GFS and update every 6 hours: 00: 30h, 06: 30h, 12: 30h, 18: 30h. On the scale frequent gusts for days on geographical points where the thresholds are exceeded from the model output shown. The streaks are shown in KMH and MPH.

Extratropical depression

80/99 Kmh  * | Little damage. Falling tree branches. It begins to be difficult to walk in areas exposed to wind. Difficulty keeping straight umbrella. The damages are rare and occur primarily in urban and domestic furniture in coastal areas. The most common are shifting and falling container. Accumulation of water on secondary roads. Wind sea with strong waves that could be powered by the groundswell caused by other cyclones in the Atlantic.

Extratropical storm

100/119 Kmh  * | No damage to buildings. Frequent falling branches of trees. Difficulty walking in areas exposed to wind. Difficulty maintaining open umbrella. The driving can be affected in areas exposed mainly trucks and other high vehicles. Damages are scarce and trees, urban and domestic furniture in coastal areas are mostly produced in power lines. The most common are shifting and falling container. Water accumulation on secondary roads and possibility of occasional flooding. Wind sea with strong waves that could be powered by the groundswell caused by other cyclones in the Atlantic.

Category 1

120/139 Kmh  * | No major damage to buildings. Its very difficult to walk in areas exposed to wind. Inability to keep open umbrella. Damage is mainly produced electric and telephone lines, trees, urban and domestic furniture in coastal areas. The driving is affected in areas exposed mainly trucks and other high vehicles. Shifting and falling containers and some billboards. Frequent falling branches of trees, water accumulation on secondary roads and possibility of flooding. Wind sea with strong waves that could be powered by the groundswell caused by other cyclones in the Atlantic. Potential damage to ports and other points of coast.

Category 2

140/159 Kmh  * | Damage to roofs, windows and locks. Fall of large trees, electric and telephone lines, trees, urban and domestic furniture, overturned containers and shift traffic signals. It becomes very difficult to walk in areas exposed to wind. Fall of billboards, scaffolding and antennas. Cuts electricity and telephone supply point. The driving is quite affected mainly trucks and other high vehicles. Some walls torn down, loose tiles and cornices. Wall collapses, landslides and broken windows. Accumulation of water on the roads and possibility of flooding. Wind sea with strong waves that could be powered by the groundswell caused by other cyclones in the Atlantic. Frequent damage to ports and other points of coast.

Category 3

160/179 Kmh  * | Major damage to buildings. Roofs severely damaged partially. Drop wirings with possible power outages in some areas in short periods of time. Fall of large trees in large areas. Fall of street furniture even in large cities. Fall of billboards, scaffolding or antennas, wall collapses, landslides and broken windows. The driving is greatly affected mainly trucks and other high vehicles. It becomes very difficult to walk in areas exposed to wind. Frequent floods. Wind sea with strong waves that could be powered by the groundswell caused by other cyclones in the Atlantic. Frequent and heavy damage to ports and other points of coast by waves.

Category 4

180/199 Kmh  * | Damage to buildings, roofs, windows and locks seriously damaged with partial or full detachment of roofs in some old buildings or in poor condition. The driving is severely affected mainly trucks and other high vehicles. Difficulty stand in windward areas. Razed large areas of vegetation with massive drop in large trees. Falling power lines in large areas with prolonged cut light. Fall of billboards, scaffolding or antennas, collapses and landslides walls, broken windows. Flooding in coastal and inland areas. Wind sea and tidal waves that could be powered by the groundswell caused by other cyclones in the Atlantic. Widespread damage and flooding in low in the waterfront.

Category 5

≥ 200 Kmh  * | Frequent damage to houses and buildings. Widespread damage to street furniture. Massive drop wirings with power outages affecting large areas for prolonged periods. Generalized fall of large trees with large flattened areas. The driving is severely affected mainly trucks and other high vehicles. It becomes impossible for people to walk even in urban areas. Fall of billboards, scaffolding or antennas, wall collapses, landslides and broken windows. Frequent flooding in coastal and inland areas. Giant waves with widespread damage in coastal areas with destruction of ports and roads exposed to waves.is possible that the evacuation of coastal areas exposed to strong waves and areas at risk of flooding rains required.

* Frequent gusts. Klaus scale is created by Meteovigo articles for creating and tracking web www.meteovigo.es. In case of temporary you must learn by the competent bodies regarding weather alerts.
